CVS ExtraCare and ExtraBucks Rewards, explained
How CVS's free ExtraCare program issues ExtraBucks Rewards, how to send them to your card, what they can and can't buy, and how they sit next to coupons.

The play
- Join ExtraCare free and use your card, app or phone number on every CVS trip.
- Send ExtraBucks Rewards and clipped coupons to your card before you check out.
- Use them before the printed expiration date; they can't be cashed out.
ExtraCare is CVS's free loyalty program, and ExtraBucks Rewards are the store credit it pays out. Couponers like CVS because its published coupon policy is unusually clear about combining offers. The catch is that rewards come with expiration dates and a few rules about where they can be used, so it pays to know the mechanics before you plan around them.
What ExtraCare gives you
When you join ExtraCare and identify yourself on each purchase with your card, the CVS app or your phone number, you become eligible for three things:
- ExtraBucks Rewards earned on qualifying purchases and through specific promotions. The terms set the base earning rate and when base rewards are issued.
- ExtraCare coupons, which CVS issues to members through the app, by email and on receipts.
- Pharmacy rewards for members who opt in, under a separate set of program rules with their own annual limits.
CVS's ExtraCare pages also describe a birthday reward for members. Its amount and redemption window are set in the terms, so check there rather than relying on a number you've seen elsewhere.
Steps: earning and using ExtraBucks Rewards
- Join and attach your account to every purchase. Rewards are tied to the ExtraCare account used at checkout.
- Open the app before you shop. In the deals and rewards area, look for ExtraBucks Rewards and coupons waiting to be used.
- Send them to your card. CVS asks you to send rewards and coupons to your ExtraCare card so they'll apply when your card is scanned.
- Read the reward's terms. Promotional rewards often require a specific purchase, like buying qualifying products in one transaction.
- Present your card at checkout. CVS's coupon policy says a qualifying ExtraCare card must be presented to use rewards.
- Check the receipt. New rewards and their expiration dates print there.
What rewards can and can't do
CVS's coupon policy says ExtraBucks Rewards can be applied to almost anything, as long as the item's price hasn't already been discounted to zero. It also says rewards and coupons cannot be exchanged for cash or gift cards. The ExtraCare terms add exclusions, including third-party delivery orders.
Returns are the other rule to know. The policy says ExtraBucks Rewards refunds may be prorated, and that if an item bought with rewards is returned, the rewards are generally put back into your account rather than paid out as cash.
Coupons first, rewards after
CVS's policy confirms you can use a manufacturer coupon and a CVS coupon on the same item, with one manufacturer coupon per qualifying item unless the coupon says otherwise. It also says CVS may process coupons in any order, with percent-off coupons generally applied last, and that a coupon's value can't exceed the price of the item it's applied to. In practice, plan your stack so coupons reduce each item first and rewards cover what's left of the total.
Expiration: the part people miss
ExtraBucks Rewards expire. Promotional rewards carry a printed expiration date, and the terms describe how base rewards are issued and when they expire. A simple habit helps: each time a reward prints, note its date in your phone, or check the app's rewards area before every trip.
CarePass and other add-ons
CVS also sells a paid membership, CarePass, with its own benefits and terms. It is separate from ExtraCare, and nothing in this play requires it.
ExtraCare's earning rates, exclusions and expiration rules change. Before you count on any of this, read the current ExtraCare terms and CVS coupon policy linked below.
Fine print
- ExtraBucks Rewards "can be applied to almost anything, provided the item price hasn't been previously discounted" to zero, and coupons and ExtraBucks Rewards "cannot be exchanged for cash or gift cards." (CVS coupon policy)

- The ExtraCare terms set how base rewards are earned, when they're issued and when they expire, and list exclusions such as third-party delivery orders. (ExtraCare terms)
- Pharmacy rewards run under separate program rules with their own limits. (ExtraCare Pharmacy & Health Rewards program rules)
Store programs and policies change. Check the official terms linked below before you count on any of this at the register.
Stack it?
