Costco member deals: how the monthly savings work

Costco doesn't take outside manufacturer coupons. Here's how its member-only instant savings and mailed savings booklet work instead, and which popular Costco tips we couldn't confirm.

The play

  1. Leave the paper manufacturer coupons at home: Costco says it doesn't accept them.
  2. Check the current member-only savings and their valid dates before you go.
  3. Let the instant savings come off at the register; there's nothing to clip.

Costco is the store where the usual couponing playbook stops working. There's no coupon clipping, no stacking, and no loyalty-app deal feed of the kind Target or Kroger run. What Costco has instead is a members-only set of instant savings that change on a regular cycle, plus a savings booklet some members receive by mail. Once you know how those work, the play is simple.

Why outside coupons don't work at Costco

Costco says it does not accept manufacturers' discount coupons other than those distributed by Costco, and it doesn't accept other retailers' coupons. Its help page explains that it prefers to negotiate its own offers rather than take part in manufacturer coupon programs. So if you're used to bringing paper inserts, leave them at home for this trip.

How member-only savings work

Costco publishes a set of member-only savings on its website. These are instant savings: the discount comes off automatically at the register in the warehouse, and online it's applied at checkout without a code. Each offer is valid only for the dates shown, and Costco attributes those dates to its agreements with vendors. Some offers apply only online, some only in the warehouse, and some to both.

Costco also mails a savings booklet. Its help pages say the booklet goes to the primary member of certain membership types, one per address, and explain how to ask about receiving it. The booklet and the website list the same kind of instant savings, so you don't need the paper copy to get the discount.

Steps: a Costco savings trip

  1. Check the current member-only savings on Costco's site and note the valid dates.
  2. Match them to your list. Costco's pack sizes are large, so an instant saving is only useful if you'll use the whole pack.
  3. Compare unit prices against your usual store. Our unit price guide shows how.
  4. Shop within the dates. Instant savings come off at the register only while the offer is running.
  5. Check the receipt. Each instant saving shows as a separate line under the item.

Tips we couldn't confirm

Two Costco tips get repeated constantly online. We couldn't confirm either on Costco's official pages, so treat them as unverified:

  • A fixed price-adjustment window. Many posts say Costco will refund the difference if an item goes on sale within a set number of days after you buy it. We didn't find this window stated in Costco's published terms. If an item you bought goes on instant savings soon after, ask at the membership counter what's possible; don't count on a fixed rule.
  • Price-ending codes. Posts claim certain price endings or symbols on Costco signs signal a clearance or a discontinued item. Costco doesn't publish any such code that we could find.

Membership itself

Costco is membership-only, and the membership fee and tiers are set by Costco and change from time to time. Higher tiers come with their own benefits under their own terms. Whether a membership pays off depends entirely on how much of your regular shopping fits Costco's pack sizes, which is a decision only your receipts can answer.

Rebate apps and Costco

Receipt-scanning apps are separate from Costco, and each app decides which receipts and items qualify. If you use one, read its terms for Costco receipts specifically before assuming you'll earn on them. See our cash-back app comparison.

Costco's savings programs and membership terms change. Check the official pages below before you count on any of this at the register.

Fine print

  • Costco says it does not accept manufacturers' discount coupons, other than those distributed by Costco, or other retailers' coupons. (Costco customer service)
  • Instant savings come off at the register, and online without a code, and are valid only for the dates shown. (Costco warehouse savings)
  • Costco's savings booklet is mailed to the primary member of certain membership types, one per address; Costco's help pages explain who receives it. (Why haven't I received Costco Savings Mailers?)
  • Membership terms, including refunds and returns, are in Costco's member privileges and conditions. (Member privileges and conditions)

Store programs and policies change. Check the official terms linked below before you count on any of this at the register.
